Gynecology

What is included in gynecology?

Gynecology focuses on women’s reproductive health and includes a comprehensive range of preventive health services, as well as diagnosing and treating health issues. Some critical gynecology services include:

Well-woman visits

It’s best to have a well-woman visit every year. In addition to the pelvic and breast exams, it’s an excellent opportunity to talk to your provider about any changes in your health or other concerns.

The team also keeps track of your vitals and other health indicators and can compare your health year-on-year, which helps them identify any changes.

Your provider can also begin the diagnostic process for women’s health issues like endometriosis, polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), or uterine fibroids.

Preventive health screenings

The team at Gruene Lake Medical offers a wide range of preventive health screenings, including Pap smears, breast exams, and STD testing. They can provide referrals for additional screenings such as mammograms, biopsies, or checks for colon cancer or osteoporosis.

Contraception counseling

The team at Gruene Lake Medical also offers contraceptive counseling and prescriptions. They serve patients of all ages, including adolescents who are sexually active and want to prevent pregnancy.

Prenatal counseling

If you’re thinking about having a baby, the team can also help you optimize your health and prepare your body for pregnancy. They offer screenings, nutritional advice, and other personalized services to help you get as healthy as possible.

When should I start to see a gynecologist?

It’s really up to you. Some women begin to see gynecologists at 13-15 years old. However, you typically don’t need to have pelvic exams or other reproductive health screenings until you become sexually active or turn 21.

Adolescents benefit from receiving gynecology services. It helps them build a relationship with their women’s health care provider, while also offering a valuable resource for questions they might not want to ask a parent.

How do I know what contraceptive is right for me?

The team at Gruene Lake Medical provides thorough exams and consultations to evaluate your health and contraceptive needs. They might recommend oral contraceptives or intrauterine devices (IUDs), including Skyla®, Mirena®, or Paragard®.

In addition to IUDs and the pill, the team offers a wide range of birth control options, including implants and injections.

If you need gynecology services, call Gruene Lake Medical or make an appointment online today.
